My Old Kettle Leaks!

If you have an old kettle that has sprung a leak, the following ideas may prove useful:

FDA Heat Resistant, food-contact approved silicons are available to quickly seal leaks at Rivet Points etc., but may not be suitable for sealing a leak at the bottom rim of the kettle where the temperature may exceed 200 Celsius.
We know that many people have successfully used a product called 'JB weld' to fix older kettles (www.jbweld.com). We have not yet tried it ourselves, but following method has worked well for some customers:

Clean off the seam area with a good rubbing with steel wool or light sand paper. Wipe off the seam area with alcohol (or other solvent) to make sure it is thoroughly clean.
Make sure the seam does not contain any water. Dry it out by letting it sit open on a window sill that gets bright sun for a week, cook it at low heat on the stove or bake it in the oven at low heat
Put a bead of well mixed JB Weld epoxy on the seam. Force the epoxy into the seam by firmly dragging your finger over the seam as you rotate the kettle. Let the epoxy cure for a couple of days ..or to make extra sure...follow steps 4-6 below:
Seal up the kettle by placing the stopper/cork firmly into the kettle opening - sealing the water chamber.
Make the kettle cold by putting it in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes. Cooling the sealed up kettle right after you apply the epoxy will cause the air in the kettle to contract and should help suck epoxy into the leak area. >Remove the kettle from the cold environment and immediately pull the stopper/cork out of the opening.
Let the epoxy cure for a day or two.
We know of a couple of other more unorthodox methods .....e.g. crack and egg into the water chamber, add water and boil it up. Once emptied again, a tiny fraction of the egg will have formed a seal within the bottom crimp and cure the leak. Another one we know of is ground black pepper....swirl it around in a little water a few times ... the small grains will find their way into the tiny leak and help form a seal .... apparently! Again, we are reliably informed that both of these work.
It is sometimes possible to tighten a leaking bottom seal of a kettle with something like a vice-grips, particularly aluminium kettles which are easier to manipulate. At the bottom of Aluminium kettles, the inner chimney is rolled around, up and over the outside wall of the kettle to form a watertight seal. Try and employ on upward type motion to bring the outer rim/bead at the bottom, up higher on the outside wall of the kettle. Try and stretch it upwards even more. That can sometimes work.

Note: It is extremely difficult to weld Steel and virtually impossible to weld thin Aluminium.
Finally, when all else fails......a slow leak will not stop the kettle from boiling if you use it without the fire base!

If the kettle leaks, place the kettle on a large stone or rock. Turn the kettle so that the dripping side is 'downhill' so to speak! Use the natural slope of the stone/rock to divert any drip/leak away from the fire in the center - and down the side of the rock! In this way, the fire will not quench and the kettle will boil quickly as normal. We use this method regularly ourselves on the shores of Lough Conn (rocks are plentiful!) with perfectly good old kettles that we have grown attached to! :-)

Question 2

What type of food can be cooked using the pot-support?

Accepted Answer

The pot-support is suitable for cooking quick meals (such as Noodles / Rice / Oatmeal / re-hydrated food / soup / toast if using smokefree fuel / etc.) and for re-heating pre cooked food, as you wait for your kettle to boil. It is not recommended that you try and cook the Sunday Roast over the kettle as you may end up boiling the kettle dry which would then cause the chimney to overheat and melt!
Remember, the Kelly Kettle is probably the fastest camping kettle in the world, so it should never be left unattended.
We recommend that the pot-support be used as follows:

Boil the kettle as normal and pour the boiling water over your food in the pot.
Refill the kettle with water. Gently place the refilled kettle back on the fire base and refuel through the chimney as required to boil the kettle a second time (the additional water can be used for coffee, washing up, bathing etc).
Assemble the pot-support (the 2 pieces slot together) and place it on the chimney. Place the pot on top of the pot-support. The contents of the pot will simmer & boil within a minute or so. Holding the pot steady with the gripper handle provided, stir the food to avoid burning it.
Within 4-5 minutes the kettle should be boiled again and the pot/pan and pot-support will need to be removed before you life the kettle off the fire base. If the food needs to be cooked some more simply add fuel to the fire base, place the 2 no. Grill Pieces on the base (using the gripper handle if required) and place your pot on the grill, stirring contents as required.

Remember, practice makes perfect!

Note:

The Pot-support is only to be used when the kettle is full with water. Never use the pot-support if the kettle is empty.
The pot-support is only suitable for cooking quick meals such as Noodles / Rice / Oatmeal / Re-hydrated food, etc.

Question 3

Top Tip if sticks are damp or wet

You can basically use anything to light a fire and then start feeding long sticks (leave them sticking out the top) into the chimney.

The heat from the smaller fire below will dry the sticks and they will gravity feed down as the bottom most piece burns!

Here in Ireland it can be very difficult to find dry fuel at times so, we use anything we can to start a small fire, then feed longer (usually damp) stick into the chimney using this trick.

Try it out... it works!

Backpackers - make your kit lighter

Accepted Answer

One idea is to remove the fire base as the kettle operates perfectly without it. Simply place the kettle on a level non-combustible surface (large flat rock / sand / gravel etc.) and slightly raise the kettle using 3-4 small flat stones to allow for air intake. The kettle should work perfectly.

Remember that with a Kelly Kettle there is no need to carry fuel and the interior space of the kettle (the chimney) can be used to carry some of your basic survival gear items (plastic signal whistle, knives, waterproof matches etc.) once those items are sealed in a plastic bag to protect them from the thin layer of soot in the chimney.

A second option for making the kettle lighter is to replace the existing handle with wire. In this case, care would need to be exercised once the kettle boils and you want to lift the kettle off the fire base. Using both hands coming in from the side, take the wire as close as possible to the connection with the kettle (without touching the kettle as it will be extremely hot) and lift the kettle straight up and away from the flames setting it down on level ground. Once the kettle is clear of the fire, the kettle can be carried normally in one hand with the wire handle directly over the chimney of the kettle.

Note: Never lift your hands directly over the chimney of the kettle when the kettle is lit as it can result in a burn.

Making a small Oven from Kelly Kettle Plates

Accepted Answer

Take your Kelly Kettle Plate/Bowl set and make a warming oven to melt your Ham and Cheese Sandwich or in our case, an Irish Reuben - Cheese Melt Sandwich.

Find a master chain link off an old bicycle chain or buy one at your local hardware store.
Put your Kelly Kettle Plates/Bowls on top of one another and drill a small hole through the rim of both Plates.
Put your master chain link up through the hole and secure with the clip of the link. This makes it so you can slide the top lid off to the side to check your food, while holding the bottom Plate/Bowl firmly with your Kelly Kettle Pot Gripper.
Use your Kelly Kettle Pot Gripper to remove your Kelly Kettle oven off of your Hobo Stove.
You can also use a split ring or other clip mechanism to hold both plates/bowls together so they don't slide around during the cooking process.

6 Essentials For Your First Group Backpacking Trip

Are you looking for a new way to hang out with your closest friends and explore the world? Try a group backpacking trip! If it’s your first time hitting the trails, or if you’ve never hiked with a group before, there are a few things to keep in mind.

You’ll want to find a location that works for everyone, map out a trail that can accommodate any and all physical needs, and decide on the sights you’d like to see along the way. You’ll also need to compile a list of backpacking essentials you’ll have to carry with you. These 6 items should be at the top of your list for your next group hike:

1. Food and water

First things first – you and your friends will want to make sure you have plenty of food and water to get you through your trip. Dehydrated or Freeze-Dried food can help lighten the load of your pack. They just need to be reconstituted with boiling water and that's where the Kelly Kettle is invaluable. Freeze-Dried foods can really add some variety to your snack selection. Of course, you can also pack canned goods to prepare some hot meals over a campfire with your group. There are portable cooking utensils and tools available today that make it possible to have a gourmet meal right at your campsite. 4. Multi-tool

A multi-tool or pocket knife is a small addition to your backpacking checklist, but could save you a lot of trouble. 5. Map and compass

While you’ll be with good company, the last thing you want to do is get lost in the woods with no cell signal and limited daylight. Someone in your group should carry a map and a compass to navigate. You may have a GPS system with advanced tracking features that can signal a rescue team in case of an emergency, but even technology can fail. To be extra cautious, stick with a map and compass as a backup, especially if it’s your first time backpacking.

6. First aid kit

Finally, when you’re preparing for your first group backpacking trip, don’t forget to pack a first aid kit that includes bandages, gauze, antiseptic and other essentials. 1. Lighten your load

Backpacking can be quite exhausting, between hiking and carrying any amount of supplies on your back. One way to preserve your energy is to lighten your load. Try packing dehydrated fruit and dried foods instead of loading up on heavy cans. Also, instead of carrying a bunch of heavy water bottles, take a canteen and a portable water filter that you can refill along the way. There are a number of energy-saving options when it comes to the camping essentials as well, such as lightweight tents and sleeping bags.

2. Eat often

Boosting your energy throughout the day will help you have plenty of physical strength to make it through your hike. Load up on carbs, calories and protein while you’re backpacking. Having a variety of snacks to choose from will help your body get everything it needs, and frequent eating can ensure you never push the line of hunger.

3. Pack protein

When it comes to powering through your hike, protein will be the biggest factor. Make sure you’re getting enough protein throughout the day to strengthen your muscles and sustain your energy.
