Question 1

Can a Kelly Kettle be used on a Gas Hob or Kitchen stove?

Accepted Answer

Yes, but the Kelly Kettle is not designed for use on a gas hob and while it will come to the boil on a hob or stove - it will be significantly slower than if sticks etc. were used.

A traditional Kettle has a relatively small, horizontal - flat bottom which makes contact with the gas/stove. That is where the heat energy is transferred to the water.

Our Kettle has no bottom and large vertical walls for heating - so it works completely differently!
It has been designed to work super fast outdoors in all weather conditions, using whatever natural fuel you find lying around!

In short, if it burns you can use it! The chimney provides a large surface area for heating. The secret to a fast boil is to get an inferno going inside that Chimney - with flames licking up the chimney walls. The fire is safely contained within the fire base and the chimney of the kettle itself, so all the flame and heat is directed upward along the chimney walls - rapidly heating the water on the other side of the wall.

A gas hob does not create this same effect. However, if you do choose to drop the kettle onto a gas hob or an open fire (the kettle is not designed for this use) it may help to partially cover the chimney top with something to trap more heat inside - otherwise the heat may pass straight out the chimney without transferring much heat energy into the chimney wall.
Sticks will always easily beat a gas hob/stove, as neither never gets a full scale inferno going! :-)

Question 3

Can an alcohol burner be used with the Kelly Kettle?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Many Alcohol Burners etc. can be used with the Kettle kettle however you would need to check to ensure that your burner fits into the base of one of our kettles.

Internal Dimensions of Bases:
Fire base of our Small Kettle is c. 10.5 cm in Diameter with a working height of c. 10cm before the chimney of the kettle starts to narrow.

Fire base of Large or Medium Kettles is c. 13cm in Diameter and working height of c. 9cm before the chimney of the kettle starts to narrow.

TOP TIP - When using your alcohol/gel burner, partially cover the chimney top of your Kelly kettle with a flat stone to retain the heat, save fuel and speed up boiling time

Question 4

Can I boil the kettle when it is only half full?

Accepted Answer

No. The kettle should be full with water at all times when in use. You should easily be able to see the water when looking into the spout. If you cannot easily see the water, then you do not have enough water in the kettle.

Our Kettles boil very fast and if left on the boil, the water will evaporate very quickly and the kettle could boil dry. If an Aluminium kettle boils dry, the inner chimney wall can overheat and melt. Please see some pictures in the FAQ 'Can the kettle be used without water in the chamber'

Fortunately, we have not had any reported incidents of Stainless Steel Kettles melting. However if the water chamber is not full, you run the risk of overheating the steel and possibly causing one of the laser welded joints to open. So, keep the kettles filled with water at all times.

Warranty Cover will not apply if the kettle is mis-used.

Can I carry water in the Kettle?

The Kettle has been designed to boil water extremely fast outdoors, in all weather conditions, using very little fuel. It is not designed to replace a water bottle on a trail/hike.

When filled with water, the Kelly Kettle should always be carried in an upright position to avoid any spillage/leakage from the water spout or chimney top. The chimney tops are not checked for water-tightness. Hence, if you were to fill the kettle and plug the water spout to try and carry water within a Rucksack, water may leak into your pack.

If carrying water in the kettle, strap it in an upright position to the side of your pack.

Do not store water in the kettle over a long period. Empty the kettle of all water after use and store in a dry location. When in storage, the whistle should be left out of the spout to allow air to circulate through, and thoroughly air-dry the water chamber.

Warning: Never use the kettle with the old Orange Stopper / Cork or, any other obstruction in the spout! Boiling the kettle with ANY obstruction in the water spout can result in a serious burn for the user or others in proximity. The steam must be allowed to vent (per the green whistle) from the boiling kettle.

Question 6

Can I use the Kettle indoors?

Accepted Answer

You would only ever create/light a wood fire (or similar fuel) in a well ventilated open space or alternatively an open fireplace with chimney. Using the Kelly Kettle is no different. It must be used in an open space or fireplace to allow the smoke away. Carbon monoxide can be released by any fuel when it is burned, including wood, coal, turf, oil, and gas.

You wouldn't create a small camp fire in the middle of your living room or hallway....so don't light the kettle there either! :-)

The Kelly Kettle is designed to work extremely well in the outdoors - in all types of weather - even strong wind and rain!
It can be safely used in the garden, on a patio, doorstep, balcony, open doorway of a shed, large ventilated barn, etc. Anywhere with good ventilation.

If using on timber decking, patio or grass, consider using our Fire-Base Support which protects the decking/lawn/slab underneath from the intense heat of the fire.

Can the kettle be used for large groups?

Accepted Answer

It is common practice here in Ireland for 1 Kettle to boil up enough water to provide up to a dozen people with hot tea / coffee at lunchtime.

Firstly, make sure you have enough fuel availabe to boil a couple of kettles and have your cold water nearby.

Boil the kettle as normal which should take approx 5 minutes. Once the kettle has boiled, hold the handle of the kettle at a 90 degree angle to the body of the kettle and lift straight up off the fire base. Do not lift the handle of the kettle directly above the chimney as this may result in a burn to your fingers. Once the kettle is clear of the fire base, the handle can be used directly over the chimney and the boiling water carried to your eagerly awaiting customers! Pour the boiling water into your cups/mugs (3 Pint Kettle approx. 7 mugs / 2.5 Pint Kettle approx 5 mugs / 1.75 Pint approx. 3.5 mugs / 1 Pint approx. 2 mugs).

Refill the kettle with cold water. If you are camped beside a lake or river, simply immerse the entire kettle into the water to fill the water chamber. Allow the kettle to drip dry for a brief moment and then, holding the handle at a 90 Degree angle to the body of the kettle, gently lower the kettle back onto the fire base where the fire should still be burning.

Refill the chimney with fuel and hey presto - boiling water again in a few minutes!

This process can be repeated until everyone has drunk their fill.

Question 8

Can the kettle be used without water in the chamber?

Accepted Answer

No! Never use the kettle without the water chamber being full.

It is physically impossible to melt the chimney if the kettle is used correctly and full with water when in use. If you use your Kettle without water in the chamber or allow it to boil dry, then you run the risk of overheating the inner chimney wall and melting the chimney (aluminium models) or causing one of the weld joints to pop open (steel models).

Stainless Steel Kettles: We have no recorded cases of any of our Stainless Steel kettles melting. However, if you boil a Steel Kettle dry or use it without water, then you may overheat one of the weld joints on the inner chimney and cause them to pop open - rendering the kettle useless! We typically see this happen near the top where the chimney narrows.

Aluminium Kettles: These have a lower heat threshold than Stainless Steel kettles. Please look at the pictures below which are of Aluminium Kettles that have been used without water or allowed to boil dry.
The tell-tale signs that an Aluminium kettle has been boiled dry entirely consistent and are:

The inner chimney cracks & bubbles up (early stages of overheating)
The inner chimney wall has either melted through completely or become so brittle that you can easily stick your finger through it!
The warning labels on the outside of the kettle have bubbled up, singed and perhaps disappeared altogether from the kettle! This is an extreme case - see bottom right picture.
NOTE: Our 2 year anti-leak warranty does not cover mis-use and does apply if the kettle is boiled dry!

So, keep the kettles filled with water at all times. Warranty Cover will not apply if the kettle is mis-used.

THE KETTLE SHOULD ALWAYS BE FULL WITH WATER.

NEVER use the Pot Support over an empty Kettle nor allow your kettle to boil dry as it will overheat the inner chimney and may ruin your kettle. If using the pot-support over the chimney, remove any accessories (Pot, Support, etc.) from the Chimney top as soon as the water comes to the boil. Then remove the Kettle from the Fire-Base. You can then continue to cook over the fire base using either a) the grill pieces which come with our Cook sets or, b) the Hobo Stove cooking accessory.
For longer, slower cooking items place the 'Hobo Stove' accessory on to the fire base of your Kettle to create a highly effective, stand alone, wood fired Camp Stove.

Question 9

Can the Pot-Support be used on the Small (1 Pint) Kelly Kettle?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The Pot support fits all of our kettles. It also flat packs for easy carriage.

Ideally, it is more suited to the Medium & Large Camping kettles which have wider bases and are therefore that bit more steady. Nonetheless, if the operator is attentive and the kettle is placed on a good level surface, you can easily cook / reheat over the small (1 Pint) Kelly Kettle.

We recommend that the Pot-Support be used as follows:

Boil the kettle as normal and then pour the boiling water into your pot over the food.
Refill the kettle with water. Gently place it back on the fire base and refuel the chimney as required to boil the kettle a second time. (this additional water can be used for coffee, washing up, bathing etc.)
Assemble the pot support (the 2 pieces slot together) and place it on the chimney. Place the pot on top of the Pot-Support. The contents of your Pot will simmer & boil within a minute or so. Stir the food to avoid burning it (holding the Pot steady with the gripper handle provided)
Within 4-6 minutes your kettle should be boiled and you will need to remove the Pot/Pan and the Pot-Support before lifting the kettle off the fire base. If the food needs to be cooked some more, simply add fuel to the fire base, place the 2 no. grill pieces on the base (using the gripper handle if required) and place your Pot on the Grill, stirring contents as required.

Note: The pot-support is only suitable for quick meals such as Noodles / Rice / Oatmeal / re-hydrated food / etc.

We will endeavor to ship all orders with 48 working hours (2 working days) of your order. Products are subject to availability and delays may sometimes occur that are outside of our control. Any dates specified for delivery are therefore approximate only. If delivery is delayed for more than 21 days, you have the right to contact us and refuse to accept the Products. Ever considered a Titanium Kettle?

We have explored a Titanium version of our Kettle but.... they would be very expensive and the initial outlay for tooling would also be very costly.
The price of the finished product would be out of reach for most people! So sales numbers would be limited. As a result, we don't believe that we would be able to recoup the costs involved.

So for now, we have no plans for a Titanium version. The Anodised Aluminium Trekker 0.6ltr / 20oz is currently our lightest model for now coming in at 0.5kg / 1.1lb, which includes the steel fire-base.

TIP: if you want to reduce the weight further, simply leave the fire base behind (it works perfectly without it - just prop it on a couple of flat stones to let air in underneath) and consider replacing the wire /wood handle with a cord. Try it ;-)

Hobo Stove packs inside the fire-base.
Fire-Base packs inside the bottom of the kettle.
Plates can be placed at the bottom of the green carry bag and everything else placed on top ;-)

'Trekker' system
Note: The large cup will not pack inside the smaller 'Trekker' Cook set, but the smaller 350ml cup will.

So if carrying the cup set (2 pcs) with your 'Trekker' kettle, the larger Cup can be packed upside down over the chimney top.

New Product Design & Testing, Customer Service, Graphic Design, Shipping & Distribution, Website & I.T., Sales & Marketing, Warranty Service, etc. are all done from our Head office here in Ireland with wonderful input and assistance from our partners around the world.

We make our high quality Stainless Steel (Food Grade 304) products in our Chinese facility. Traditionally, all Kettles were made from Aluminium however, around the late 1990's international demand for Aluminium products decreased significantly. So much so that today, 95% of orders are for steel products. Stainless steel is considered by many to be a 'cleaner' metal and hence the change in consumer demand.
We make our Anodized Aluminium Kettle in China.
Our Sagan Water Filtration products are made in the U.S.A. and Mexico.
Our Tents, Sleeping bags and Rucksacks are made in Bangladesh.
We are currently developing some new products which will be produced here in Ireland.

Question 18

How is the kettle lifted on and off the fire base?

Accepted Answer

This is the correct way to lift the Kelly Kettle clear of the fire base and flames:

Using both hands, hold the wire handle at an angle of 90 degrees to the body of the kettle. The wire will be cool to touch once the kettle is used correctly on its base.
Lift the kettle straight up keeping the handle parallel to the ground. The weight of the kettle will ensure that the kettle remains upright and that no water will spill.
Once the kettle is clear of the base & flames, you can hold the handle in one hand directly over the chimney of the kettle and easily carry the water to wherever it is needed.
To pour the water, hold the handle in one hand and gently lift on the chain to pour.
If more boiling water is needed, simply refill the kettle with cold water and gently place it back on the fire base - again using two hands as shown in the picture below. Refill the chimney with fuel and 'hey presto', your kettle will be boiled again in about 3-5 minutes.

Note: Never put your hands or lift the handle directly over the chimney of the kettle when the kettle is lit, as it can result in a burn.

How to clean your kettle

Cleaning your kettle

The inner chimney of your kettle should not need to be cleaned (I have never cleaned my own kettle which is now over 20yrs old). We find that the soot tends to dry up and flake off over time and it never really builds up to such an extent that it hinders the performance of the kettle.

Dry hardwoods burn very clean and leave little or no residue. On the other hand however, pine cones can be quite waxy and can leave a sticky residue on the inner chimney wall of the kettle.

If ever you felt that it needed a slight cleaning then:

If you need to scrub the chimney walls or the outside of the kettle, use a nylon or plastic scrubber and soapy warm water can be used to gently clean the chimney.....although this may require some elbow power!
A tip we heard was to spray it with WD40, let it soak for a while and then wipe it off!
Another easy sounding idea is to spray on oven cleaner ...then simply wipe off later with paper towels! (Thanks for the tip Dave) CARE: Please use the appropriate Cleaner for your make of Kettle i.e. Aluminium or Stainless Steel. If you use a cleaner that is not suitable for the metal of your kettle, it may cause corrision.
Of course, I could be accused of been lazy for not cleaning my own kettle but ..... Mark Marshall in the U.S. kindly wrote in and pointed out that heat is infrared electromagnetic energy which is absorbed better by a black surface than a reflective one. So, it is quite possible that a slightly sooty chimney actually helps the kettle heat more quickly and efficiently....than a clean one! The sooty chimney certainly adds character to ones kettle! :-)

To clean inside the water chamber:

Aluminium Kettles: you can add 1-2 cups of white distilled vinegar to the water in the chamber. Bring the mixture to the boil, then allow it to sit and cool in the kettle for a couple of hours. Discard the mixture, rinse the kettle and boil again with water. Discard this boil also. Your kettle should now be clean. If not fully clean or if limescale is particularly heavy - simply repeat the steps above.

Stainless Steel Kettles: For a quick clean, introduce a small bit of washing up liquid and boil the kettle. Then discard and rinse. You can also put a small piece of a dishwasher tablet into the water and boil it up. Rinse well before use and you should be good to go! This usually leaves the water chamber spotless.

Question 20

I have knocked the Handle off my old steel kettle!

Accepted Answer

On our stainless steel kettles, the brackets for the handles are spot-welded onto the side of the Kettle (as is the chain attachment). If your stainless steel kettle takes a heavy knock causing the spot welds to fail and one side of the handle (or the entire handle!) to come loose, then it may be possible to do a quick fix and keep boiling ;-)
We have seen a whole variety of ways to fix this .....Glues can work, e.g. Superglue, Loctite, or other Metal glues. Can use a heat resistant glue but the temperature on the outside of the kettle is not particularly high.

We have seen large jubilee clips used to strap the brackets on!

Other people have actually removed the handle completely to make the kettle fit into tight spaces (Kayaks/Bikes/Rucksacks, etc.). We have seen leather straps/old belts (something with grip that doesn't slip easily) wrapped around the top ('shoulder' where the handles are normally attached) of the kettle. When paired with a soft rope or light wire handle this methods works nicely!

Another useful idea if removing the handle is to place a Neoprene sleeve/jacket around the upper part of the kettle - and attached some sort of fabric/rope handle to that. In addition to packing slightly smaller, users advise that the neoprene helps the kettle boil faster. But 30 seconds or a minute faster really wouldn't put me up nor down when I'm relaxing and looking forward to a cuppa. :-) The neoprene would however give the kettle a little protection against knocks and scrapes. ;-)

And of course you could spot weld the bracket back on (a local car mechanic might be able to spot weld the stainless steel)

Hopefully you never need to use any of these tips, but if you run into trouble with your handle - know that there are options available ;-)

My Old Kettle Leaks!

If you have an old kettle that has sprung a leak, the following ideas may prove useful:

FDA Heat Resistant, food-contact approved silicons are available to quickly seal leaks at Rivet Points etc., but may not be suitable for sealing a leak at the bottom rim of the kettle where the temperature may exceed 200 Celsius.
We know that many people have successfully used a product called 'JB weld' to fix older kettles (www.jbweld.com). We have not yet tried it ourselves, but following method has worked well for some customers:

Clean off the seam area with a good rubbing with steel wool or light sand paper. Wipe off the seam area with alcohol (or other solvent) to make sure it is thoroughly clean.
Make sure the seam does not contain any water. Dry it out by letting it sit open on a window sill that gets bright sun for a week, cook it at low heat on the stove or bake it in the oven at low heat
Put a bead of well mixed JB Weld epoxy on the seam. Force the epoxy into the seam by firmly dragging your finger over the seam as you rotate the kettle. Let the epoxy cure for a couple of days ..or to make extra sure...follow steps 4-6 below:
Seal up the kettle by placing the stopper/cork firmly into the kettle opening - sealing the water chamber.
Make the kettle cold by putting it in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes. Cooling the sealed up kettle right after you apply the epoxy will cause the air in the kettle to contract and should help suck epoxy into the leak area. >Remove the kettle from the cold environment and immediately pull the stopper/cork out of the opening.
Let the epoxy cure for a day or two.
We know of a couple of other more unorthodox methods .....e.g. crack and egg into the water chamber, add water and boil it up. Once emptied again, a tiny fraction of the egg will have formed a seal within the bottom crimp and cure the leak. Another one we know of is ground black pepper....swirl it around in a little water a few times ... the small grains will find their way into the tiny leak and help form a seal .... apparently! Again, we are reliably informed that both of these work.
It is sometimes possible to tighten a leaking bottom seal of a kettle with something like a vice-grips, particularly aluminium kettles which are easier to manipulate. At the bottom of Aluminium kettles, the inner chimney is rolled around, up and over the outside wall of the kettle to form a watertight seal. Try and employ on upward type motion to bring the outer rim/bead at the bottom, up higher on the outside wall of the kettle. Try and stretch it upwards even more. That can sometimes work.

Note: It is extremely difficult to weld Steel and virtually impossible to weld thin Aluminium.
Finally, when all else fails......a slow leak will not stop the kettle from boiling if you use it without the fire base!

If the kettle leaks, place the kettle on a large stone or rock. Turn the kettle so that the dripping side is 'downhill' so to speak! Use the natural slope of the stone/rock to divert any drip/leak away from the fire in the center - and down the side of the rock! In this way, the fire will not quench and the kettle will boil quickly as normal. We use this method regularly ourselves on the shores of Lough Conn (rocks are plentiful!) with perfectly good old kettles that we have grown attached to! :-)

Stainless Steel is slightly heavier than Aluminum however; it is a stronger metal and therefore more resilient to dents.
The Aluminum kettle boils slightly faster than its steel twin as Aluminum conducts heat faster than steel.
There is little or no difference in price.
There should be no 'taste' off either metal.
All of our kettles come with upgraded steel fire-bases as standard (traditional aluminium bases used to burn out quite quickly). These new Steel bases can be turned into an efficient wood fired camp stove by simply dropping our hugely popular 'Hobo Stove' accessory on top. If you are not completely satisfied with the quality of the materials or the workmanship of your Kelly Kettle, you may return it UNUSED within 10 days from the date you purchased your Kettle (your purchase date) and we will provide a replacement Kettle.

Subject to the limitations below, we, the Kelly Kettle Company, warrant that the Kelly Kettle you have purchased is free from defects in materials and workmanship and that your Kettle will function as intended for a period of two (2) years from your purchase date under normal and proper use, so long as it is properly maintained as specified in the Operating Manual.

This Limited Warranty applies only to the original purchaser of the Kettle and is not transferable.Under this Limited Warranty, we will provide replacement for a component we find to be defective in materials or workmanship and our costs of labor associated with the repair of the Kettle. Any component we replace will be covered by the initial two (2) year warranty period applicable to the Kettle you originally purchased. You are responsible and shall pay for all shipping costs required to obtain Warranty Service.

This Limited Warranty DOES NOT cover damages or defects caused by improper use, abuse, misuse, accident, impact, negligence, improper maintenance or storage, contamination and deterioration due to water or other liquids, sand, insect infestation or acts of God. What about a Handle on the side of the Kettle?

Several years ago we asked our customers which handle they would prefer...

First Option: The current bail type handle (like a bucket) over the top? or,
Second Option: A Jug type handle on the side?

Certainly there are pros and cons to each style of handle. However when asked, the overwhelming majority of users chose the existing bail style handle for the following reasons:

The Bail handle allows the Kettle to be carried comfortably by your side to either a) easily transport cold water from a nearby water source or, b) bring boiling water safely around the campsite to where it may be needed.
A jug type handle requires more wrist strength and dexterity which many younger and older users may not have! A full SST 'Base Camp' kettle will weigh approximately 2.6kg and would require the user to stoop/bend over much lower to get a safe grip on the handle for lifting off the fire-base. That is simply not comfortable or even possible for some elderly and young kettle users. Such exaggerated bending also brings the users face over the chimney and smoke - which is definitely not a good thing!

Our smaller 'Trekker' Kettle holds less water (0.6 ltrs) and therefore is lighter. So, it would be possible (from a weight and safety perspective) to put a handle on the side of the Trekker kettle for pouring. But, we still have issues 1 & 2 above which customers were quick to highlight.

Therefore for now at least, the traditional and more comfortable Bail handle design remains! ;-)

What material are Kelly Kettles made from?

Kelly Kettles are available in Food Grade (304) Stainless Steel or Anodised Aluminium (1020).

Our steel Kettles and Cookware are made entirely from Food Grade 304 Stainless Steel. It is the most common form of steel found in kitchen cookware, sinks and many kitchen appliances.
It is an austenite steel which means it is non-magnetic. The Nickel makes it non-magnetic.

304 has higher Chromium & Nickel levels than other stainless steels and thus is more resistant to corrosion. Austenitic, or nickel-containing, non-magnetic stainless steel, is highly resistant to corrosion, which is super important if you’re cooking directly on it. If the piece was fully magnetic stainless steel, it would corrode and not last very long without the nickel to stabilize the metal.
For this reason, it would be very unusual to find stainless steel pots and pans which are magnetic on both the outside AND the inside. You will find magnetic stainless steel in the layer on the outside of some quality pieces of stainless steel. This is to make it compatible with induction stovetops, which involve the use of a rapidly charging electromagnetic field to heat cookware. Typically the inside of the pot will be austenite steel and non-magnetic.

Question 27

What type of food can be cooked using the pot-support?

The pot-support is suitable for cooking quick meals (such as Noodles / Rice / Oatmeal / re-hydrated food / soup / toast if using smokefree fuel / etc.) and for re-heating pre cooked food, as you wait for your kettle to boil. It is not recommended that you try and cook the Sunday Roast over the kettle as you may end up boiling the kettle dry which would then cause the chimney to overheat and melt!
Remember, the Kelly Kettle is probably the fastest camping kettle in the world, so it should never be left unattended.
We recommend that the pot-support be used as follows:

Boil the kettle as normal and pour the boiling water over your food in the pot.
Refill the kettle with water. Gently place the refilled kettle back on the fire base and refuel through the chimney as required to boil the kettle a second time (the additional water can be used for coffee, washing up, bathing etc).
Assemble the pot-support (the 2 pieces slot together) and place it on the chimney. Place the pot on top of the pot-support. The contents of the pot will simmer & boil within a minute or so. Holding the pot steady with the gripper handle provided, stir the food to avoid burning it.
Within 4-5 minutes the kettle should be boiled again and the pot/pan and pot-support will need to be removed before you life the kettle off the fire base. If the food needs to be cooked some more simply add fuel to the fire base, place the 2 no. Grill Pieces on the base (using the gripper handle if required) and place your pot on the grill, stirring contents as required.

Remember, practice makes perfect!

The Pot-support is only to be used when the kettle is full with water. Never use the pot-support if the kettle is empty.

What types of fuel can I use in my kettle?

If it burns...you can use it! We use:

Sticks - work best as they create an inferno in the chimney which rapidly heats the large chimney wall and boils the water very quickly. You really want to see the flames licking around and up the chimney walls ;-) Typically, one chimney full of sticks will go a long way to boiling the kettle.
Pine Cones - a personal favourite. Burn great and are also excellent fuel for cooking with the Hobo Stove later ;-)
Dry grass - best used as tinder as it burns off very fast. For best results, bunch it together, twist it tight to slow down the burn rate and make it last longer.
Dried peat - or 'Turf' as we call it in Ireland. Needs good kindling to get it lit, but is a great fuel, burns hot and slow. Again, great for cooking on.
Dried Animal Dung - burns similar to peat above. But stand upwind of the kettle!!
Paper - twist to tighten like grass above.
Cardboard - will burn fast so keep feeding the fire.
Spirit burner or Alcohol Stove. Typically these are small and the flames/heat would be concentrated to the centre of the kettle - causing much of the heat to escape straight up the chimney. Covering most of the chimney top (with a flat rock, etc.) may help speed up the boil time a little bit or place something onto the spirit burner to throw the flames wider and out against the chimney walls.
Fuel tablets - as with Spirit burner above. Boil time will be much slower than sticks/pine cones.
A fistful of sand in the firebase with a little bit of petrol over it. Surprising it will burn slowly and not erupt in a big ball of flames. The slow burn will allow you to introduce larger fuel like sticks, etc. Obviously never, ever, ever, try and add petrol to an already lit fire!
Bean Can with petrol in it. As above, the top will light and not erupt into a ball of flame. But be careful not to spill the remaining petrol after, as flames could easily spread on the ground.
Your mates shirt or even and old underpants! Needs good kindling to get it lit - and again....stand upwind!!

We would recommend using a firelighter of sorts, but then use sticks/wood as fuel.
Top Tip if sticks are damp or wet: You can basically use anything to light a fire and then start feeding long sticks (leave them sticking high out the top) into the chimney. The heat from the smaller fire below will dry the sticks as they gravity feed down into the fire below. Here in Ireland it can be very difficult to find dry fuel at times so, we use anything we can to start a small fire, then feed longer (usually damp) stick into the chimney using this trick. Try it out ..... it works!

Why was my Order Declined / Cancelled?

Why was my Order Declined / Cancelled?
If an order is automatically 'Declined' or 'Cancelled' right after the payment stage, it is because the Credit Card Transaction was declined by your Credit Card provider. In this case, please contact your Card provider.

The two main reasons for a Card been declined are:

Insufficient funds, or...
Your Bank suspect it is a fraudulent transaction and block the transaction to protect your account. If this happens to you, simply contact your Credit Card provider about the failed order attempt. When they know it was a genuine attempt by you to make a purchase, they will ease the fraud settings and you will then be free to use your card to complete a purchase with us.

If you have received an Order Number from us (e.g. 9000#####) via e-mail, then we will already have all your Order & Contact details. So, we can simply call you on the number provided and take your card details over the phone to complete the order.

Note: We do not store customers Credit Card details so a quick call should see your order completed in full.

Sleeping Bag - Temperature Ranges

EN ISO 23537 The standard temperatures that designate the range of utility for a sleeping bag system.

Comfort temperature (Tcomf): Lower limit the comfort range down to which a sleeping bag user with a relaxed posture such as lying on the back is globally in thermal equilibrium and not feeling cold (related to standard woman and in standard conditions of use). This is the temperature range where a “standard” woman is comfortable. According to the EN/ISO standards, she is “not feeling cold,” in a “relaxed posture.”
Limit temperature (Tlim): Lower limit at which a sleeping bag user with a curled-up body posture is globally in thermal equilibrium and not feeling cold (related to standard man and in standard conditions of use). (Note: The temperature is lower because the metabolic rate used in the equation for a man is higher than that used in the equations based on a woman’s physiology.) Here, a standard man is “in a situation of fighting against cold (posture is curled up inside the sleeping bag), but in thermal equilibrium” and not shivering. That means that somewhere within this range is likely the performance limit of your bag.
Extreme temperature (Text): Lower extreme temperature where the risk of health damage by hypothermia occurs (related to a standard woman with a curled up posture in a situation of high cold stress with shivering). This is a point of danger that can lead to death. Per the EN/ISO standard’s language: “In this range, a strong sensation of cold has to be expected. There is risk of health damage by hypothermia. A sleeping bag should only be used in this range in an emergency.”

Season Ratings

The explanations for sleeping bags season ratings ere quite simple. Sleeping bags are sold with 1,2,3,4 or 5 season ratings and this refers to the minimum temperatures in which the bag can comfortably be used (hence the alternative term of 'comfort rating'). Note: where there is no EN endorsement, these ratings are a guideline only and will vary considerably from manufacturer to manufacturer.

One-season sleeping bags are basic and generally used indoors or in tropical climates. Think kids on a sleep-over or a balmy night in a hammock!
Two-season sleeping bags are commonly called summer bags. Typically used in summer but depending on your base layers and the weather, you may be able to use it toward the end of Spring and early Autumn. Typically sold as a bag which can be used in temperatures down to 5 degrees centigrade.
Three-season sleeping bags are the most common choice for experienced campers (e.g. our MUMMY) Suitable for all but winter camping these sleeping bags are designed to keep you comfortable in temperatures down to around 0 degrees centigrade.
Four-season sleeping bags, as the name suggests, are designed for those who will be camping all year round or are likely to be in harsher environments such as camping at altitude in the mountains. Temperature range for four-season bags is around the -10 degrees centigrade mark.
Five-season sleeping bags are regarded as 'Technical Sleeping Bags' and are not really designed for the general market. They are more usually associated with expedition standard camping requirements as they are suitable for temperatures down as low as -40 degrees centigrade.

Other Considerations...
You don't need to be a scientist to know that people react very differently to the cold – what is chilly to one person would be unbearable for another. Season ratings are a great starting point but they are not an exact science. This is even more obvious when you realise that season ratings vary considerably between brands with the result that one make of two-season bag may actually be a warmer buy than another's three-season product.
Also consider the following: those of a slighter build will not only have less body fat to keep them warm but will also leave more empty space in their sleeping bag which affects insulation and warmth. Young people are less prone to the cold than older people. Fitness levels will also dictate to some degree how much you feel the cold – usually the fitter you are the warmer you will be.
Typically men feel the cold less than women.

Where your tent is pitched and the environment generally may affect how warm you will feel – a tent pitched at altitude, somewhere exposed to the elements or in a damp place will always make you feel colder. Your sleeping mat – no matter how super-duper your sleeping bag, you are going to get cold if you don't insulate yourself properly from the ground.
There is perhaps some degree of trial and error with regard to knowing which season sleeping bag will suit you best. Don't be too concerned about how hot you might get - sleeping bags can be unzipped or discarded altogether and getting cooler is always going to be easier than getting warm enough! Consider when and how you will be camping along with your own tolerance of the cold and then opt for the best quality sleeping bag your money can buy. As you snuggle down into your cosy sleeping bag on your next camping trip then you will be glad you invested both the time and money to find the perfect sleeping bag for you.

Tent Fabric, Specifications and Coatings Explained

Lets take the myth and confusion out of Tent Specifications and jargon! It's important that you choose the best tent for your needs so lets quickly look at the terminology you will find in Tent specifications from manufacturers.

When looking at tents for sale, reputable brands and retailers should provide tent fabric specs so you can work out a tent’s performance capabilities and suitability to handle different conditions. Here's an introduction to different tent fabric specifications.

Hydrostatic Head (HH), water column or ‘waterproof’ ratings (measured in mm)

Polyester and nylon fabrics are not waterproof and so silicone or PU coatings are applied to give waterproof properties. The amount of water that they can ‘hold out’ is tested using a high column of water which is measured in mm. Ratings range from 800mm up to a max of 10,000mm with ratings of 1500mm and higher generally considered ‘waterproof’.

All our tents have a rating of 3,000mm so are extremely reliable in bad weather!

What is Denier?

Denier (D) is the unit measuring the weight and thickness of the individual threads used in the fabric. Fabric with a higher Denier will be thicker, stronger and more durable than the same fabric with a lower Denier – 40D Nylon will be stronger than 15D Nylon and 70D Polyester stronger than 50D Polyester. Remember that different fabrics have different strengths. Lower Denier is common in ultralight nylon tents and tarps where low weight is paramount.

All Kelly Kettle camping tents are Polyester 70D. Something like a heavier duty event shelter may be in the region of 150D as thicker material would be required to deal with greater stresses and longer exposure to the sun and elements.

What is Thread count?

The thread count (T) is the number of threads used horizontally and vertically per square inch of fabric ... 190T means a total of 190 threads. A higher thread count represents a greater density and tighter weave in the fabric. For this reason you will often find lower Denier fabrics (with a ‘thinner’ thread) have a higher thread count.

All Kelly Kettle Tents have 190T whereas our standard Tarp has 210T.

What is Ripstop?

Ripstop tent fabrics are those with a special reinforcement to increase resistance to tearing and ripping. When weaving, a stronger thread is used at regular intervals to form a crosshatching, grid pattern visible in the fabric. This improves strength of the fabric and makes any tears or holes less likely to spread and become bigger.

We use the Ripstop fabric in ALL our Tarps & Tents to give you the best product available.

What are fabric coatings?

Chemical coatings are applied to tent fabrics to increase their performance, especially resistance to water. What is a silicone coating? What is silnylon? A silicone coating is usually applied to nylon, hence 'silnylon'. The coating ‘permeates’ the nylon fabric creating a stronger silicon ‘reinforced’, waterproof nylon fabric with better stretch and tear strength. Silicone repels water and so it’s easy to shake off excess water and dries quickly. On the down side silicone coatings are more expensive, stop ‘breathing’ in the fabric which may lead to greater condensation, and result in a very slick and slippery surface meaning that tent seams cannot be taped - Silnylon seams require manual application of a liquid seam sealant.

Our Ultralight Tarp is made from Ripstop Silnylon fabric and waterproof to 3000mm & UV50 to protect you from the suns harmful rays.

What other fabric coatings are there?

A number of other coatings can be applied to tent fabrics to improve UV resistance, water resistance (allowing water to bead and roll off), rot and mildew resistance and to add fire retardant properties to fabrics.

What is Fire Retardant CPAI-84

CPAI-84 is a testing method used specifically for confirming the flame resistance of fabric used in manufacturing camping tents. Suppliers must submit the various tent materials (ceiling, walls, and floor) to a third-party organization licensed to perform the required CPAI-84 flame retardancy testing. Suppliers of the tent materials that meet these standards are then awarded an official laboratory approved certificate that can be shared with their customers.

History of the Test: In 1976, the CPAI (Canvas Products Association International), now known as the International Fabrics Association International, set the flammability standards for camping tents as means to help protect consumers by limiting accidents caused by flames near the vicinity of camping tents. The test does not declare that the material if fire proof if exposed to a continuous flame. Rather the CPAI-84 test confirms fire resistance after the material is exposed to a flame.

Notes on Materials

Polyester has a higher intrinsic durability than nylon. Better abrasion resistance and exposure to ultraviolet radiation. Polyester behaves better in bad weather conditions, heavy rain and strong wind. It is harder, and less permeable to water vapor than simple nylon. Polyester is less ” breathable ” than nylon. It`s holds less water than nylon. Polyester is usually padded with polyurethane (PU).
Ripstop technology refers to a technique of weaving where fibers are interwoven in a cross shape. This significantly improves the final layering and prevents the material from unraveling. Polyester is generally considered better than nylon in camping tents and/or mountain/family tents.

Ripstop Nylon (polyamide) with silicon coating. Silicon coated materials are not hydrophilic - water vapor can not pass through them. Water does not get into the material, but it forms a pellicle on the surface of it. Instead, it is extremely resistant to bad weather conditions. It also behaves much better to UV radiation and this is extremely important for mountain expeditions at high altitudes (over 4000 m).

What to look for in your next tent fabric specs?

Generally, the higher the denier count the stronger and heavier the fabric will be, and the higher the mm rating the more ‘waterproof’ it will be. Have a look at the following ... 70D 190T Polyester Ripstop 3000mm CPAI-84 – a high quality polyester, fire-retardant tent fabric suitable for bad weather that is rip resistant. Perfect for camping tents. All our tents have this high specification.

40D Ripstop SilNylon 3000mm – a light 40 Denier nylon fabric suitable for ultralight tents or tarps, ripstop so has better tear resistance, silicone coating topside and underside, good waterproof rating at 3000mm should be able to deal with most rain. Our Ultralight Tarp is made from this material.

Question 33

Top Tip if sticks are damp or wet

Accepted Answer

You can basically use anything to light a fire and then start feeding long sticks (leave them sticking out the top) into the chimney.

The heat from the smaller fire below will dry the sticks and they will gravity feed down as the bottom most piece burns!

Here in Ireland it can be very difficult to find dry fuel at times so, we use anything we can to start a small fire, then feed longer (usually damp) stick into the chimney using this trick.

Try it out... it works!

Backpackers - make your kit lighter

Accepted Answer

One idea is to remove the fire base as the kettle operates perfectly without it. Simply place the kettle on a level non-combustible surface (large flat rock / sand / gravel etc.) and slightly raise the kettle using 3-4 small flat stones to allow for air intake. The kettle should work perfectly.

Remember that with a Kelly Kettle there is no need to carry fuel and the interior space of the kettle (the chimney) can be used to carry some of your basic survival gear items (plastic signal whistle, knives, waterproof matches etc.) once those items are sealed in a plastic bag to protect them from the thin layer of soot in the chimney.

A second option for making the kettle lighter is to replace the existing handle with wire. In this case, care would need to be exercised once the kettle boils and you want to lift the kettle off the fire base. Using both hands coming in from the side, take the wire as close as possible to the connection with the kettle (without touching the kettle as it will be extremely hot) and lift the kettle straight up and away from the flames setting it down on level ground. Once the kettle is clear of the fire, the kettle can be carried normally in one hand with the wire handle directly over the chimney of the kettle.

Note: Never lift your hands directly over the chimney of the kettle when the kettle is lit as it can result in a burn.

Grilled Blue Cheese-Basil Burgers – Cooking on the Hobo Stove

Sometimes camp food can get a bit boring! These burgers are delicious and brilliant! Great for camping, or even take your Kelly Kettle to the neighborhood park for a fun family adventure. A wholesome meal cooked fresh and easily with your Hobo Stove.

Camp Cookin’ Tip

Prepare these burgers at home; press into patties. Stack with parchment or wax paper between patties. Wrap in plastic wrap and then tin foil (to help keep them cool in your cooler). Much easier to prepare at home and be ready to throw them in the pan and cook fast for hungry campers! Use a larger pan than shown for cooking multiple burgers.

Ingredients:

450g ground sirloin, or extra lean beef
1 spoon minced garlic
Sprinkle of onion powder
100g container crumbled Blue Cheese
Fresh basil leaves, chopped
Salt and black pepper to taste
Tomatoes, onion and lettuce
Burger buns
Mustard and Ketchup if desired

Preparation:

Create a fire in the steel fire-base of your Kelly Kettle and Preheat the grill grate that comes with each Cook Set. Create a bed of embers and lightly oil the grill grate. A fry pan will work for these as well - simply drop our Hobo Stove accessory onto the fire base and fry-away! .
Mix the ground sirloin, garlic, onion powder, Blue cheese, and basil together in a large bowl until evenly blended. Divide mixture evenly to form four patties.
Cook burgers on preheated grill until meat is evenly browned and center is no longer pink, about 5 minutes on each side.
Then place burger onto the buns and add your toppings and chow down!

Question 36

Campfire Mac and Cheese

CAMPFIRE MAC AND CHEESE

Serves 1-2 persons

Olive oil
Pinch of salt
2 pinches smoked paprika
140g evaporated milk
220g shredded white cheddar cheese
200g cooked macaroni noodles (cooked at home before your trip)

In a medium sized pot, heat oil over medium heat on your Kelly Kettle Hobo Stove, add salt, smoked paprika and evaporated milk. Stir until mixed. When the mixture begins to lightly simmer after 2-3 minutes, add cheese and stir until all the cheese is melted. Take off heat and add the noodles. Stir until everything is cheesy, and serve!

TIPS:

Noodles - Cook the macaroni at home the night before you leave on your camping trip. Rinse it with cold water and store in a sealable plastic bag with a little bit of oil. This will keep it good until it’s mac time.
Cheese - You can add more or less cheese to your taste or add other cheddar cheeses. Also you might consider adding liquid smoke instead of smoked paprika
Texture - For a more crunchy Mac and Cheese, toast bread crumbs before leaving home. Add to recipe. Add paprika and cook, stirring, until crunchy, 3 to 4 more minutes. Pour from pan to a bowl and let cool; then seal in a lid container or resealable plastic bag.

Oklahoma Chilli with Corn

OKLAHOMA CHILLI WITH CORN

Serves 3

200g lean ground beef
1/2 large onion, chopped
1 can Barbecue Beans, undrained 1/2 can Fire roasted diced tomatoes, undrained
1/2 can tomato sauce
250g frozen corn
Spoon chilli powder
Spoon ground cumin
Cheddar cheese to taste
Corn chips to taste

TIP: (Take 3 zip lock bags: In one, mix the onions and ground beef. In the second, mix the beans, diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, corn, chili powder and cumin. In the 3rd, mix the corn chips and cheese)

STEP 1
In 2 quart saucepan, cook beef and onion over your Hobo Stove (medium heat) 5 to 7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until beef is thoroughly cooked; drain.

STEP 2
Stir in the remaining ingredients (that you previously mixed in a zip lock bag) except cheese and corn chips. Heat to boiling then simmer uncovered 5 to 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until corn is tender. Top with cheese and corn chips.

Bisquick Cinnamon Rolls With Icing

This is modified version of the recipe included in Kevin Callan's book, Ways of the Wild: A Practical Guide to the Outdoors (Broadview Press, © 1993). The quantity given will yield eight cinnamon rolls, each approximately 6cm in diameter.

Dry Ingredients

195g Bisquick
395g T margarine
2 tsp cinnamon
50g white sugar
30g raisins OR 30g cup walnuts OR 15g of each
Flour for rolling
25g icing sugar

Seal each ingredient separately for transport into the field.
Pack a piece of waxed paper with the dry ingredients.
Fire up the Kelly Kettle Hobo Stove, grease and heat a fry pan.
Add enough cold water to bisquick mix to make a firm dough.
Place waxed paper on a canoe paddle or other flat surface and sprinkle with it flour. R
Roll the bisquick dough into a rectangle, 16cm long and 0.75cm inch thick, on the floured waxed paper.
Spread margarine onto flattened dough, sprinkle on cinnamon, sugar and raisins.
Roll dough into a seven inch long log and cut into one inch slices.
Place slices in a frying pan and cook on low heat, turning frequently to ensure that sugar doesn't burn.
When rolls appear cooked on both sides, remove from fry pan.
Mix icing sugar with a SMALL amount of water to make a runny icing.
Drizzle icing over cinnamon rolls.
Serve hot or cold.

Making a small Oven from Kelly Kettle Plates

Take your Kelly Kettle Plate/Bowl set and make a warming oven to melt your Ham and Cheese Sandwich or in our case, an Irish Reuben - Cheese Melt Sandwich.

Find a master chain link off an old bicycle chain or buy one at your local hardware store.
Put your Kelly Kettle Plates/Bowls on top of one another and drill a small hole through the rim of both Plates.
Put your master chain link up through the hole and secure with the clip of the link. This makes it so you can slide the top lid off to the side to check your food, while holding the bottom Plate/Bowl firmly with your Kelly Kettle Pot Gripper.
Use your Kelly Kettle Pot Gripper to remove your Kelly Kettle oven off of your Hobo Stove.
You can also use a split ring or other clip mechanism to hold both plates/bowls together so they don't slide around during the cooking process.

You’ll want to find a location that works for everyone, map out a trail that can accommodate any and all physical needs, and decide on the sights you’d like to see along the way. You’ll also need to compile a list of backpacking essentials you’ll have to carry with you. These 6 items should be at the top of your list for your next group hike:

1. Food and water

First things first – you and your friends will want to make sure you have plenty of food and water to get you through your trip. Dehydrated or Freeze-Dried food can help lighten the load of your pack. They just need to be reconstituted with boiling water and that's where the Kelly Kettle is invaluable. Freeze-Dried foods can really add some variety to your snack selection. Of course, you can also pack canned goods to prepare some hot meals over a campfire with your group. There are portable cooking utensils and tools available today that make it possible to have a gourmet meal right at your campsite.
